Sports History On This Day: April 14

April 14, 1969 – A historic day indeed as the first Major league baseball game was played outside the borders of the United States! The expansion Montreal Expos hosted the St Louis Cardinals in a real game that counted in the standings that was not played on American soil.

The Expos won the game 8-7 at Jarry park near Montreal, Quebec, Canada. During the game, Dal Maxvill of the Cards smacked the first Grand Slam Home Run on foreign soil in the fourth inning of play as over 29,000 spectators including the Montreal Canadiens Hockey team watched on. The Habs would end up winning the Stanley Cup less than a month later in four straight games over the St Louis Blues in an ironic foreshadowing.
