Sports History On This Day: April 19

April 19, 1947 – Maurice Richard is named as the National Hockey League’s Most Valuable Player for the season. The stalwart right-wing of the Montreal Canadiens ended up scoring 45 goals during the regular season of 1946-47.

The Canadiens had the top record in the NHL that season but fell in the Stanley Cup finals to the Toronto Maple Leafs 4 games to 2. Two seasons earlier Richard scored a career-high 50 goals in the 1944-45 season. He hoisted Lord Stanley’s cup 8 times in his brilliant career and was a 14-time All-Star in the league.
