Sports History On This Day: March 19

One of the most fantastic five minutes in sports history occurred in a flurry in the closing games of the 1937-38 NHL season. Two teams in the NHL’s fast-paced game took that to a whole new level when the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Americans combined to score 8 goals in just under 5 minutes.

The Leafs held a 3-1 advantage after two periods. New York fired one between the pipes to cut the lead early in the third and that opened the floodgates.

Murph Chamberlain then scored for the Maple Leafs. A big fight soon after spawned and Eddie Wiseman and Req Hamilton served penalty minutes for their interaction in the mele and that is where most of the scoring was done in the short time frame. The Americans crawled back into the contest as at one point it was 6-5 on the scoreboard but Buzz Boll and Harvey Jackson lit the lamp 53 seconds apart to seal the victory for Toronto, 8-5.

The loss by the Americans dropped the club to third place in the standings, a mere two points behind the Montreal Canadiens who tied the New York Rangers in their contest played. Toronto would eventually move on to make the Stanley Cup finals that season only to lose to the Chicago Blackhawks in 4 games.
