Sports History On This Day: April 2

April 2, 1931 – This story is one of those juicy tidbits from history. A 17-year old young lady from Tennessee named Jackie Mitchell struck out two legendary New York Yankees in an exhibition baseball game at Engel Stadium in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Star sluggers Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig went down on strikes with Miss Mitchell on the mound. The photos were taken later by the press to show Ruth congratulating the young pitcher, so was this staged to sell tickets and newspapers? Possibly but it is still fun to look back at history.
