Sports History On This Day: March 23

March 23, 1938 –  Commissioner, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis declared that seventy-four of the players in the St Louis Cardinals minor league system would be declared as free agents. There were almost 100 players in all across baseball that this declaration affected to be able to seek opportunities on other clubs. Landis who served as the very first Commissioner of Baseball held this position from 1920 through his death in 1944. He oversaw events in the MLB such as this and the 1919 Black Sox Scandal.
