NFL Player Profile: Tyreek “The Freak” Hill

When you are looking through the latest NFL odds, a man you will often see appearing is Tyreek Hill. He plays wide receiver for the National Football League’s (NFL) Miami Dolphins in American football. Yet, for a long time, he was a key member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

As a rookie, Hill was primarily a return specialist, but currently, he only plays as a wide receiver. Thanks to his pace, he acquired the nickname “Cheetah” following his rookie season. He won Super Bowl LIV with the Chiefs and has been picked for the Pro Bowl in each of his 7 seasons in the league.

Early Career

When he was in high school, Hill was a keen athlete. He was a regular sight on the track and field and was an incredible sprinter. Hill participated in both football and track at Garden City Community College.

For the football squad of the Broncbusters, Hill rushed for 659 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore in 2013. While also collecting 67 passes for 532 yards.

Oklahoma State University

Hill became a highly desired junior college recruit after graduating from Garden City Community College and chose to enlist at Oklahoma State University.

Hill made his Cowboys debut in August 2014. Although, due to his recent domestic violence incident, Oklahoma State expelled Hill from both its football and track teams on December 11, 2014.

In his lone season at Oklahoma State, Hill ran for a total of 102 times for 534 yards and one touchdown and caught 31 passes for 381 yards and a touchdown.

University of Western Alabama

The University of West Alabama announced that Hill had signed up and was going to play football for the Tigers on September 1, 2015.

Hill’s roles on the field were split up fairly evenly between running back, wide receiver, punt returner, and kick returner. He never had a game with more than 100 yards receiving or rushing.

NFL Career

Hill was apprehended for domestic abuse, thus, it was expected that he could go undrafted throughout the 2016 NFL Draft. However, he was capable of demonstrating his skills at West Alabama’s Pro Day despite not being called to the NFL Combine. 

His speed greatly impressed the scouts and his workout also gained recognition. 

Even today, one of the names that you may wish to have in your Fantasy NFL picks, is Tyreek Hill.

Kansas City Chiefs

Hill was chosen by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 5th round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He became the first West Alabaman to be selected in the draft since 1974.

Due to his prior problems with domestic violence, fans of the Chiefs attacked the team for the selection. The Chiefs conducted an unplanned press conference after selecting him and spoke with the media on his initial day of rookie mini-camp.

Hill and the Chiefs agreed to a four-year, $2.58 million deal on May 17, 2016. Hill started the 2016 year as the Chiefs’ fourth wide receiver, punt returner, and kick returner. By the end of his rookie season, he was named to the first-team all-pro as a punt returner.

From 2017 to 2018, Hill began to develop and become better. He slowly made his way up the rankings. By the end of 2019, he was ranked 19th among the top 100 players for 2019. He then went on to make two Super Bowl appearances with the Chiefs in 2019 and 2020.

Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins acquired Hill from the Kansas City Chiefs on March 23, 2022. He is now the best-paid wide receiver in the NFL. This is thanks to the guaranteed $72.2 million that comes with the deal.

Hill marked his Dolphins debut in Week 1’s 20-7 triumph over the New England Patriots, seizing 8 catches for 94 yards. Hill helped the Dolphins qualify for the playoffs before losing to the Buffalo Bills in the wildcard round, 34-31.

He then concluded the year with his career-highs in receptions as well as receiving yards with 119 and 1,710, respectively.

Records

Over the years, Hill has collected several franchise records with both teams he has played for.

When it comes to the Kansas City Chiefs he holds the record for most touchdown receptions within a season at 15. This is a tie alongside Dwayne Bowe. He also holds records for the most receiving yards in a season which he achieved in 2018 with 1,479 yards.

In 2022, Hill added two more records to his name this time with the Miami Dolphins. He collected 1,710 receiving yards in a season and 119 receptions in a season. Both of which are franchise records.

Recently, Hill boasted how he truly thinks he can be the first wide receiver in NFL history to amass 2,000 yards in a season.

Final Thoughts

Tyreek Hill is a well-known name in the NFL. While he may have an unpleasant past, that hasn’t stopped him from showing that he is a great football player. Hill was a common sight during Kansas City Chief games, and now he is becoming a great asset for the Miami Dolphins.
