June 15, 1970 – An exciting 18-hole playoff took place at the LPGA Championship at Pleasant Valley Country Club. Shirley Englehorn claimed victory over former event champion Kathy Whitworth by 4 strokes. It would be Englehorn’s only major title of her great career.
The eventual winner had forced the playoff with a fantastic birdie on the last hole of regulation. This was a bit of sweet revenge for Englehorn who had lost by one stroke in this same event in 1967 to then-champion, you guessed it, Kathy Whitworth.
