Sports History On This Day: March 22

March 22, 1903 – In New York City tickets went on sale for a brand new baseball team in the American League. The team would be branded as the New York Highlanders, as the franchise, a year earlier was known as the Baltimore Orioles. They were also called the Americans at certain points in time.

Stay with me for a second, this was the original Orioles, who became the Highlanders in 1903 and then in 1913 was renamed the New York Yankees. The rest is history as the Yankees would go on to win more MLB titles than any other team, so far as this writing, the franchise has appeared in a record 40 World Series Championships and won 27 of them.
