June 29, 1950 – It was a monumental day in the realm of United States Soccer! Though they were given little chance of succeeding, the Americans pulled off the most astonishing outcome of the 1950 FIFA season. US Striker Joe Gaetjens took a perfect pass from teammate Forward John Souza to rocket a shot past the British goalkeeper in the first half.
The USA team controlled the ball well and then stonewalled the Brits in the second half to lead the US to an upset, 1-0 win over England in a FIFA World Cup group match in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The next time an American Men’s team would defeat England would be in 1994.
