Sports History On This Day: September 17

September 17, 1954 – Re-matches in title fights generally have taken a while to reschedule for a variety of reasons over the course of boxing history. In an unusually rapid repeat fight after the first one took place on June 17, the contestants again faced off some 90 days later at Yankee Stadium.

Champ Rocky Marciano Knocked Out challenger Ezzard Charles in the 8th round to retain his world heavyweight boxing title.
